Fill in the gaps, please.
Whether I am praying alone or with others, I have noticed myself saying a lot, "God, you fill in the gaps." Words have fallen so short for me lately, I either cannot find them or there are none. I have come across the painful things of people's lives and I don't know what to pray, and I don't know what to begin to say, so I tell God to fill in the gaps of my prayers, the gaps of our future to our present, the gaps of pain to joy. How I would love to write out this humongous prescription across the sky and pull it down and hand it to these dear people and say, "Your answer", I obviously cannot. In the meantime, I have done a little jaw-dropping and shaking of my head in awe at these friends who are ever resilient and faithful to their God and to the bettering of themselves--no matter how they get there. I'm put to shame by their effervescent strength. I have often read or have heard that people of different faiths or even of different denominations within Christianity pray this sort of repetition of words-- Like "Lord, have mercy on us" or King David in the Psalms, "...His love endures forever". And I think I get that now more than ever. I don't know what to say, so I repeat and repeat and repeat just one line. And I hope that's enough. And then I think the least I can do (really, the least we can do for anybody) is to encourage them in this life and tell them who they really are and what they mean to us. Maybe that's kinda like my own attempt to fill in the gaps while I busily tell God to get going and work on his part. But then again, maybe that is his part, too.
